President's Message

President’s Message – December 2021

Hello IMA Michigan Council members and colleagues,

As we now head into 2022 after what has been a very tumultuous 2020 & 2021, I am reminded of a quote by Helen Keller who once said, “A happy life consists not in the absence, but in the mastery of hardships.” In my thoughts as well is another quote by President Theodore Roosevelt, “Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.”

These past couple months, our struggles in dealing with the pandemic, inflation, election results, and a host of other issues in our lives both personally and professionally have made us stronger and frankly who we are. Thus, I envy all of us for making it to the here and now where we can enjoy a happy life and sense of accomplishment after overcoming our hardships (please accept a virtual pat on the back from me for a job well done). With our newfound strength we can be confident we can take on just about anything with style and grace that the world will throw at us in the future.

There are many tools that one can use to help them overcome hardships. In the management accounting arena one of the best toolkits one can have is an IMA membership. Further you can attempt to prove your skills and tenacity through completion of the CMA or CSCA exam process. Think of an IMA membership as a toolkit and you are MacGyver tackling all sorts of issues that appear in your career with it, and the CMA & CSCA exams as a test to prove the skills you have mastered. You may not need to pass the CMA or CSCA exams to use your membership toolkit but while the effort in passing these exams may cause some hardship, pain, and won’t be easy, you will feel (or felt) an emotional satisfaction/happy life for achieving it and will have earned a level of respect among your colleagues because of it.

One of the parts of the tools that is your IMA membership toolkit is the CPE that is available just because you’re an IMA member. I would like to thank the conference committee and the council board for this past 20th Annual Fall Conference and for keeping this tool as sharp as ever. We had amazing speakers from across the world come and deliver various topics to you. I hope you were able to attend at least one of these sessions.

As we prepare for the 21st Annual Fall Conference please let me, or the council board know of any speakers or topics that you would like to hear.
